MABJ COVID-19 Resources

 

                                              At MABJ, we stand with our colleagues and fellow journalists who may be facing financial                                                          hardships due to industry layoffs and furloughs as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. Listed                                                              below are some resources that are available to our fellow journalists who may be in need. We                                                    will continue to add more resources as information becomes available.

 

1.    FOOD:

MID SOUTH FOOD BANK:
For those who are seeking a free meal, here is a link with a schedule of the Mid-South Food Bank's scheduled mobile pantry distribution. You will need to bring ID (driver's license, utility bill or another bill with your home address)

2.    RENTAL ASSISTANCE:

The Tennessee Supreme Court has halted all evictions until April 30th. However, Memphis Area Legal Services CEO Cindy Ettingoff says it's still important to communicate with your landlord about any financial hardships you may have and to try to pay what you can.

 

3.    CASH ASSISTANCE:

Are you a working journalist that's been infected with COVID-19?  You could qualify for a one-time $1,000.00 grant.

4.     UTILITY PAYMENTS:

MLGW:

To assist in the pandemic, MLGW is not disconnecting customers for nonpayment and not assessing late fees. Payment arrangements can be done through the website or app and folks can monitor their usage through the app. For those with smart meters, it might be a good time to do PrePay. http://www.mlgw.com/


5.    INSURANCE PAYMENTS:

LIBERTY MUTUAL:
They are announcing the Personal Auto Customer Relief Refund, which will give customers a 15% refund on two months of auto premiums. http://libertymutual.com/covid-19

PROGRESIVE:
All active personal auto customers will be automatically credited 20% of their April and May premiums. Learn more about what we’re doing to help our customers here. SAFECO:
Personal auto insurance customers will receive a 15% refund on two months of their auto premium, based on your premium amount as of April 7, 2020. https://safeco.com/covid-19

6.     LOANS: 

MICROLOANS FOR JOURNALISTS:
Journalists can sign up to lend or borrow up to $500. Borrowers cannot be freelancers and have to have been laid off, furloughed, or had their pay cut. https://microloansforjournalists.org
